Lighting Tips that bring your Exhibition Stand to Life

Why Lighting Matters at Exhibitions

It goes without saying, but lighting is extremely important at exhibitions and events. It gives a strong first impression to exhibition visitors from a distance and allows them to be drawn in to learn more about what it is you are offering. Not only does it capture the attention and draw visitors in, it can also increase ‘dwell time’, i.e. the amount of time spent at your stand, especially if your lighting enhances your product display and branding in the correct ways.

Choose the Right Type of Exhibition Lighting

There are a variety of types of lighting which exhibitors can use to enhance the appearance of their stand. Here are some of the more common types used.

Spotlights

Spotlights, as the name suggests, is ideal for highlighting specific areas within the stand, such as product displays, branding etc. It directs the attention of visitors exactly where you want their attention to be placed and helps you achieve that ‘premium’ aesthetic, giving products a clean and flattering aesthetic.

LED Lighting

LED lights are long-lasting and energy-efficient and the amount of heat generated from them is considerably low. As such, LED lighting is a safe and more comfortable option, offering consistent brightness throughout the course of the event. It is particularly ideal for long-running events, especially if such events run for days.

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting offers lighting and illumination across the stand overall, creating a warm, comfortable but also exciting atmosphere for potential visitors. Due to the blanket-style lighting across the entire stand, it eliminates any shadows or dark spots whilst also making the shell scheme feel more spacious and open.

Avoiding Harsh Shadows & Ensuring Even Coverage

Be sure to avoid any harsh shadows wherever possible by positioning lights at multiple angles as well as avoiding placing lights too close to product items, walls or graphics. Try and space lights evenly across the stand to ensure consistent and clean illumination all over. Once positioned, check how the lighting covers the stand by observing from different angles and adjusting accordingly.

Avoid Common Exhibition Lighting Mistakes

There are a few lighting mistakes that you will want to be aware of; we will go through some of the main mistakes below so that you can avoid them when exhibiting.

Over-lighting

Over-lighting the stand can have the opposite effect of good lighting and can essentially be a little too overwhelming and uncomfortable to be around. It can also wash out graphics and products, not to mention increase your energy costs unnecessarily. There is a fine line when it comes to lighting; getting a few opinions of colleagues can be a good way to ensure you don’t go over the top.

Lighting that clashes with your brand colours

Ideally, you will want to use lighting colours that are either neutral or those which do not clash with your brand colours. A clash of colours looks unprofessional and cohesion, but it also gives an inconsistent look across the board.

Not testing the lighting before an exhibition

This one might sound a little too obvious, but theoretically, you can have the lighting organised and positioned perfectly, but you will not know how the illumination will look until you switch everything on. Be sure to test the lighting with plenty of time before the exhibition or event commences and make any adjustments as necessary.
